The three dollar cover charge is well worth it.  A circular bar serves as the nucleus of the club. Turn right to get to the seating area. Turn left to get to the dance floor. There's a platform for the brave and an interactove DJ for even the shyest sorts. The Alumni Club is known for their 70's and 80's music, and the Friday night DJ enjoys getting his crowd involved. He coersed the guys and girls into singing their respective parts in the Grease soundtrack music at the beginning of the night. And by the end, everyone was singing the chorus of American Pie with their lighters waving in the air. At one point, the DJ requested that everyone put their arm around the person next to them -- whether you knew them or not. The crowd did exactly as he said. Then he yelled for everyone to raise their other arm and cheer. The place went up for grabs. Finally, he asked for silence. A brief silence and then the Cheers theme music began. The entire crowd swayed in unison as if they were all traveling on the same rocky ship.
The ceiling was bright with neon hula hoops reminding the college age crowd of their childhood innocence. The smiling sweet tempting shot servers came around with Bailey's, Lemon Drops and Tequila. Something for everyone. The dance floor was surrounded by tubs of beer so one never had to go far to quench their thirst.
The dress was difficult to categorize. Everyone seemed to bring their own style -- a well-rounded mix. I spoke to Becky Wilcox, a senior from Bradley University who was visiting Chicago for the weekend. "This is my favorite bar yet. I like hearing happy songs like Come on Eileen instead of the same old electronic beats."
If you're looking for a taste of nostalgia, go to Alumni Club. You'll feel instantly close to your bar mates as the crowd screams over Bryan Adams, "Those were the best days of my life!"
