Club 720
720 N. Wells
(312) 397-0600
I had the pleasure to visit a salsa-merengue club, 720's, named after
its address. I spoke to the owner briefly beforehand, and he informed me that Saturday was
the best night to be there. Based on his suggestion, I arrived diligently Saturday at
about midnight.
I seemed to arrive at the perfect time as the
line was not to long and the crowd was really building up. Women and couples were led
directly inside and the men were left outside, eagerly anticipating the party for about 15
to 20 minutes. Men, bring some ladies to avoid the wait. The cover was a steep twenty
dollars for men and ten dollars for women.
The club has three dance floors, and a
billiard room for all the pool sharks. The entrance was introduced with underground house. This floor had the largest
bar stretching from the entrance to the other side of the room, the lights were dim with
three disco balls enticing the dance floor. From there I had two choices, test my luck
upstairs, or check out the downstairs. They had elevators to help me make my decision. I
had the first pretty girl I met solve my dilemma. I followed her downstairs were the salsa
had the
dance floor full.
The downstairs room was smaller and much more
packed. It had an interesting pathway on the side, a corridor with brick windows on one side so you can see
the dance floor, and rooms on the other side with booths and dim lights. This made a nice
place to have a drink or just chill with any new friends. Right!
After a little mingling, I went to the bar
and asked for the most popular drink. I received a long island iced tea, and it turned out
to be a strong island iced tea (two of these you'll be twice as nice). It was worth my six
dollars, though some people might disagree about the price. Beer prices were about four
bucks a beer. Heavy drinkers beware, your pockets will run thin.
From the downstairs room, I took the elevator to the fourth floor.
This floor had the biggest room, which also had stairs leading to a balcony and bar.
Merengue had the room captured with couples twisting and spinning to its fast beats. The
front of the floor had a glass window view of the outside world, which nobody really took
notice of.
Overall the club was okay, it was overpriced
and there were too many men, but atmosphere was good and so was the music. I give it two
beer mugs on my scale, of five being the highest. Till next time, drink, dance and do your
thing.
