I walked into Hi-tops on a Saturday night and I fully received what I
expected: a Wrigleyville bar packed with people who were having a good time. Not only is
Hi-tops a great place to go for clubbing, but it is also a great sports bar right across
from Wrigley Field. Whatever your reason is for checking out the Wrigleyville bar scene,
Hi-tops is a worthy place to stop in and see. |
I paid my five dollar cover (there is a cover charge only on Friday and
Saturday nights) and joined the huge crowd inside. Hi-Tops has a pretty good sized dance
floor and it was completely packed with people. The late twenties-early thirties aged
crowd there was a college fraternity-like crowd; people were dressed really casual, no one
really cared what anyone looked like, and everyone there was just there to get blitzed and
have a good time. There were a lot of drink specials the whole night, I was able to enjoy
most drinks for only a buck for a whole hour, and drinks were easily accessible from the
bars, beer tubs, and waitresses scattered around the place. |

The music featured at Hi-tops
consists mainly of 70s disco and 80s music. While I was there, it seemed to be
all 80s music with a brief 70s smattering of Brady Bunch and Partridge Family
music. Now Im not an anti-80s guy, especially in the wake of the post-Wedding
Singer 80s revival, but the DJ made me want to get away from the past for a
while as he played such selections as Vanilla Ices Ice, Ice Baby and twice
played Barry Manilows Copa Cabana within the same hour. The music selection
didnt matter, everyone was just having a good time drinking and dancing, including
some people who were drinking and dancing on top of one of the bars. |

| In
addition to being a night spot, Hi-tops is a great place to go to watch a sporting event
or to hang out after a Cubs game. There are a few big screens located in the center of the
building, and many other smaller TV screens littered throughout everywhere else. The place
is decorated in a sports theme and there is some sports memorabilia on the walls, but all
of this is barely noticeable when the lights are down during the nightclub hours. You also
have the option to order food while watching a game or other TV show (I guess Melrose
Place is popular here on Mondays.) I was here on a March night while the NCAA
basketball tournament was taking place and they had a huge board keeping track of all the
teams and the results of each game; I found myself thinking that this would have been a
good place to watch my beloved UIC Flames get their butts kicked.
The bottom line on Hi-Tops is that it is a
very good Wrigleyville bar that is great to dance the night away at, go to after a Cubs
game, or watch any sporting event. If for whatever reason you want to go to another bar
after Hi-Tops, there are something like 200 hundred other bars all in walking distance to
go check out. The people I was with really enjoyed having a college bar flashback at
Hi-tops and I recommend stopping in if you are in the area. |
