Liquid Kitty was a place that had a buzz going on about it for a few months before I finally got to see it in person. I had heard about it’s lounging atmosphere, psychedelic decorations, and fish aquariums hanging from the ceiling. Liquid Kitty’s name may be one of its drawing points too. I mean come on, Liquid Kitty (think about the name if the joke doesn’t hit you immediately), what a great sexual euphemism name for a bar. I half expected Liquid Kitty to be raunchy, with scantily clad women available for table dances for any interested parties, but it turned out that Liquid Kitty was just an interesting name.

Enough about the name, let me tell you about the bar. It is located in the Wicker Park area on 1807 W. Division and is attached to the movie theater/bar Celluloid. The only entrance is through Celluloid and there is a $7 cover, but this cover allows you access to both Liquid Kitty and Celluloid and all of the movies featured that night. There is no valet parking available, and parking spots are pretty limited, although some friends and I were able to get some nice spots just a half a block away.

After walking through Celluloid, I entered Liquid Kitty’s main room. The room is predominately red with Partridge family-ish orange and yellow designs, with many couches and tables surrounding the bar. I got there around 10:30, and almost all of the space was already taken up by the relaxed, twenty-something, casual crowd. We grabbed the last table and a buddy and I went to go buy some drinks.

Beer prices were pretty standard for a Chicago club at $3.00-$3.50 and shots were about the same. Martinis are Liquid Kitty’s specialty ($7.00), and they have a pretty extensive variety. I was looking very distinguished with their "Fruit Loop" martini; and I believe I stumbled upon every woman’s favorite drink when I ordered a girl a chocolate martini.

We wandered around through the rest of the place and walked up to the second floor of Liquid Kitty. The upstairs floor is designed identically to the lower floor, and is divided in two by the staircase. On one half of the floor is another bar and a pool table. On the other half of the bar is another little lounging area, with a couch and a few chairs, and this is probably the most private part of the club, away from everyone else. Also right by the couches is a secret bathroom, it is very convenient though because the only other bathrooms are all the way back in Celluloid right where the movie is showing. The whole upstairs reminded me of hanging out at someone’s basement, only the drinks were much more expensive.

Liquid Kitty combined with Celluloid is a cool place to spend the night hanging out at. It is definitely not a place to dance the night away at, but it is a nice place to talk with your friends, have some drinks, sit back on a couch, and maybe catch part of a movie next door. Liquid Kitty reminded of Leg Room on Rush and Division, but instead of a Swinger’s-40’s film noir theme, it was more of a 70’s lava lamp theme. I recommend checking these bars out and seeing for yourself what everyone is talking about.
