So out of the blue, Details Magazine calls our site, and asks us to
assist in a story about 10 hot clubs around the nation. Well this sounded cool as hell to
take part in, so we quickly agreed to assist in any way we could. Their only criterion was
that they wanted a new club, not a place that has been around a while that everyone knows
about. Hmmm*.hot new club, huh? Well, one place that immediately came to our mind was the
Mint.
So this was definitely a cool situation. I'm going to a new club to review for the site,
and possibly add in some way to a national publication. Thoughts of
glory entered my mind as I envisioned the exciting life of a writer for a big fancy
magazine. Now don't get me wrong, I have it good at chicagonights.com,
the dental plan is an industry leader , but I wouldn't mind doing one of those
"Sexiest women on TV" stories that was recently in their mag. I crashed back
down to reality as the Mint didn't have me on the guest list but the outstanding bouncer
crew knew me as "one of the guys who does Chicagonights.com," so I was able to
avoid the $10 cover.

I walked into the Mint and it was a very upscale bar. The title
"Mint" does not refer to "peppermint" or "mint flavored
Scope" but it refers to money mints, and in this case luxurious money mints. The
money mint theme is appropriate for this place because it is going to be making money like
they were printing it.
The first room has a big bar and some tables and booths around it. Above the booths are
coin shaped light kaleidoscopes that will definitely catch your eye throughout the night
as you become more intoxicated. The DJs played techno/house/underground music all night on
a little floor above the main area that also features a few lounging chairs and couches.
There is also a little cigar area that was still roped off when I was there, perhaps it
was too new to be stocked yet * it looks like it will be pretty cool though.
We went to the back of the room and there are two more bars and several more tables and
chairs. We grabbed a table and I ordered a round of Heinekens from the waitress ($5.00
each) and thought to myself this is definitely a cool place to hang out. I checked out the
twenty-something crowd and it was just filled
with beautiful people; everyone was dressed up and anyone who looked too casual had to
feel out of place. Even the bartenders and wait staff were in tuxedos, helping to add to
the upscale feel.
Now when you talk upscale, the finishing touch had to be the bathrooms. I know this is
relatively minor detail in clubs, but these were the nicest bathrooms I have ever seen in
a club. Now as a male, I am used to seeing the worst possible
conditions in men's restrooms at bars. The filth is incredible and that is why men think
everything else in the world looks clean because of the conditions we have to suffer
through every weekend when we go out. But these were sparkling white and everyone had to
mention them (ladies rooms are reportedly just as nice
too.) |

Up until now, all I have talked
about is sitting around and drinking (oh, I ordered a martini too*$8.00) but there is also
a dance floor underneath the main floor of Mint. Unfortunately, it was closed when I was
there, and it was closed
still when fellow reviewer Khoi Soto went there a couple weeks later. I asked the bouncer
who was guarding the entrance of the dance floor what the deal was. He said
something to the effect that they don't have a license for the dance floor yet. Chicago
has a bunch of crazy laws, but I have never heard of this problem before. Anyway, please
imagine what the dance floor is like here:
We left Mint around 2 AM and it was pretty packed. It is a great club that will be even
better when their dance floor opens up. The upscale, mint theme of the club works great
and is a nice differentiating feature from Chicago's other
clubs. Details took our information and our recommendation about Mint as one of
the nation's hottest new clubs, but I guess they had some problems with the story and
Details went with the Funky Buddha Lounge instead. There goes my big contribution to
Details*... However, not being in Details won't hurt Mint, they will get enough publicity
and word of mouth as an awesome club without anyone's
help. |
