Mother's is a tourist attraction nightclub at Rush and
Division that has been around for years. I work with a woman who just turned forty, and
she's been going to Mother's since she was 16 and had a fake ID. A bonus about tourist
attraction clubs is that they're hopping every day of the week -- not just Fridays and
Saturdays. Mother's is recognizable because of the giant heart on the sign outside with
Mother's tattooed across it. It's a basement club. You must walk down a flight of stairs
to get to the cave of fun. The bouncer gives a card to each person that comes in. Get the
card punched after every drink you buy, and you'll get the sixth one free. The first thing
you'll see are a couple of pool tables. The front bar is circular and there is a low stage
in front of it for D.J. and karaoke equipment. Behind the bar there's a jukebox for the
times when the D.J. is not available. The D.J. is definitely available on Thursdays and
Fridays which are karaoke nights. Thursday is Ladies Karaoke and Friday is karaoke for
everyone! Last Thursday night, at Mother's, the prize for winning the karaoke contest was
2 free trips to Las Vegas or Orlando. There was a panel of about fifteen ladies. There was
some incredible talent in the group. And some girls just wanted to be silly by singing
songs like Rapper's Delight. The contest was judged by applause. A girl named Bridget won.
It was her first time at Mother's and she was ecstatic! I spoke to her boyfriend about the
victory. Paul Huxel, recent graduate of the University of Colorado, said, "I like
this place. The drinks are reasonable -- which I didn't expect. And there's contests and
giveaways all the time. I like that too." The back bar is also circular, but that
area is strictly for dancing. The back room has a higher, wider stage and the music has a
lot of bass. That room is usually smokey and the couples dancing often gets dirty.
Wednesday is salsa night. (Free lessons from 8:30-10:00 P.M.) Saturday is Dance til You
Drop with D.J. Pete. Give Mother's a try. There's a reason it's been around so long. |
