3730 North Clark Street

Smart Bar is located directly under the Metro concert hall in the
Wrigleyville neighborhood. It's another one of those small places that do not really get
noticed by the mainstream of nightclub life. The entry is complicated. After you enter
through the outside doors there is a small ticket office where a cover is charged. Your
hand is stamped and a corridor awaits you. |
At the end of the corridor is a door. Open it and you will find a
staircase down to Smart Bar. Overall, the place is relatively small and simple in design,
but it offers loads of fun for those who like it progressive. Directly in front of the
foot of the staircase is a candlelit bar for all your alcohol needs. Across the room in
the corner is a pool table for shooting stick. The DJ booth is located next to the pool
area and it overlooks the dance floor. A second bar can be found next to the DJ booth, and
cozy booths line all the empty wall space that is left. |

One thing you can always expect,
the more simple the club design, the more special nights the place has to offer. Smart Bar
has seven of them. On Sundays, Jesse De La Pena flows with smooth hip-hop for a phat
nation. Mondays are called "Rock & Roll High School". DJ Dave Roberts plays
a variety of early 80's punk, ska, rock alternative, and new wave for those who want
something hard. On Tuesdays, the industrial-strength vampires come out for
"Noir". Gothic princess Scary Lady Sarah and special guests mesmerize audiences
with blends of gothic and industrial stylings. Wednesdays are "Blush", where
house and smooth rhythms fill the air. On Thursdays, DJ Barry Phipps plays all that
classic vinyl that he bought at the Maxwell Street market. Expect disco, funk, and soul
from Mr. Phipps. Fridays are called "Futurhythem". DJ Tom Pazen pumps out only
the most progressive beats that he can find. End the week with DJ Gil Burns on Saturdays,
where he plays electronica, hip-hop, industrial, and alternative for all your dancing
desires. |

terms of paying no cover, that's hard to find with Smart Bar. I wouldn't fret though. The
cover charge at Smart Bar varies according to what night it is. The coolest thing about
Smart Bar is those "unexpected" guests that miraculously show up to spin. There
were times that progressive techno artist Aphex Twin would show up and mix a guest spot at
Smart Bar. |
